Key facts
Important: Ukrainian citizens do not need a visa to enter Ukraine, but border-exit rules during martial law are separate and much stricter.
Entry for Ukrainian citizens
Ukrainian citizens may enter Ukraine without a visa. A valid Ukrainian passport or another accepted Ukrainian citizenship document is usually the key entry document.
Leaving Ukraine during martial law
During martial law, the general rule is that men aged 18 to 60 cannot leave Ukraine unless they fall within a legal exception. A current exception allows men aged 18 to 22 to cross the border if they carry a valid passport and a military registration document.
Dual citizenship and border checks
If you hold Ukrainian citizenship, expect Ukrainian border rules to apply even if you also hold another passport. Border officers make the final decision at the checkpoint, and other exempt categories must carry documents proving their right to travel.
Rules can change quickly, so always verify your current status and documents with the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine before travel.
